Canada’s Role In The Global Cannabis Market
Canada became the first G-7 nation to adopt a national adult-use cannabis legalization measure in 2018. Over seven years after Canada legalized cannabis nationwide for adult use, the North American country remains home to the most robust cannabis market on the planet.
In addition to its domestic cannabis industry, Canada continues to be a dominant force in the international cannabis scene. Arguably, the biggest example of this can be found in Germany, which is Europe’s largest legal cannabis market. In 2024, Germany imported over 33 tonnes of medical cannabis products from Canada, and that number increased exponentially to over 93 tonnes in 2025.
A group of leading Canadian cannabis industry experts recently analyzed the current state of Canada’s industry, its role in the global cannabis market, and what other nations can learn from Canada’s experience. The panel discussion was held at the recent International Cannabis Business Conference in Berlin and was moderated by Canadian medical cannabis pioneer Alex Revich. Mr. Revich was joined by:
- John Slaughter – Founder & CEO, High North Laboratories
- Chris Crosbie – Founder & Chief Operating Officer, Atlantic Cultivation
- Barry Laxer – CEO And Founder, Cielo Verde
- Jason Moscovici – Founder, Provisions Legal Services
- Jay McMillan – CEO, Thunder Spirit Ventures
