Medical cannabis was first legalized in the Czech Republic in 2013, with the first patients receiving safe access to medical cannabis in 2014. Starting in 2020, health insurance companies in Czechia have covered up to 90% of costs associated with legally prescribed medical cannabis therapies. Patients can obtain up to 30 grams per month.
Czech doctors prescribe medical cannabis for such health conditions as cancer treatments, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries, HIV, and neurological disorders. The Czech State Institute for Drug Control (SÚKL) recently published medical cannabis sales data, demonstrating that Czech medical cannabis sales are increasing.
“More and more doctors in the Czech Republic are prescribing medical cannabis. In the first nine months of 2025, the number of prescriptions rose to more than 41,000; on average, around 3,800 patients per month use this form of therapy.” reported Czech Republic News in its local coverage (translated to English).
“From January to September 2025, more than 41,000 prescriptions for medical cannabis were issued in the Czech Republic.” the outlet also reported about Czechia’s medical cannabis market. “A total of 296 doctors, including specialists and, since April, general practitioners, are authorized to prescribe this form of therapy.”
Allowing general practitioners to prescribe cannabis has helped improve safe access in the Czech Republic. The over 41,000 medical cannabis prescriptions issued in the first nine months of this year in Czechia are an increase of over 6,000 prescriptions compared to the same period in 2024.
An estimated 836 grams of medical cannabis were dispensed in the Czech Republic during the first year of legal sales. The total amount of medical cannabis dispensed in Czechia since then is estimated to have totaled roughly 1,109 kilograms through September 2025, with 314 of those kilograms reportedly being dispensed in just the first nine months of 2025 alone.
Earlier this year, lawmakers in the Czech Republic approved a historic measure that will legalize cannabis for adult use. The legalization measure, which will permit adults to cultivate up to 3 plants and possess up to 100 grams of cannabis, is set to take effect on January 1st, 2026, and will further improve access to cannabis for suffering patients.
