Canada Sold $498.7 Million Worth Of Legal Cannabis In August
Canada’s government released new sales data for the nation’s emerging legal cannabis industry. According to Statistics Canada, the nation’s licensed cannabis retailers sold nearly $500 million worth of legal cannabis products in August 2025.
“Statistics Canada released August retail sales for the country, with cannabis sales increasing from the July levels, up 1.4% to C$498.7 million. This sequential growth was also up on a per-day basis due to the same number of days as the prior month.” reported New Cannabis Ventures about Canada’s sales data.
“In 2024, total sales increased 4.5% to C$5.39 billion, and they are up 4.5% so far in 2025.” the outlet also reported. Ontario’s legal cannabis market led the way, with retail outlets selling over $197 million worth of products in August. Below is a table of historical sales data via Statistics Canada:

Canada remains the top legal national cannabis market on the planet and a glowing example of how countries should approach cannabis public policy and industry regulation. Canada became the second country to adopt national adult-use cannabis legalization in 2018, and the first G-7 nation to implement the public policy change.
A report published earlier this year found that in 2024, Canada’s legal cannabis industry contributed more than $16 billion to national GDP and generated roughly $29 billion in total economic output.
Canada’s legal cannabis industry’s direct GDP contribution in 2024 was more than that of the forestry and logging sector ($3.4 billion), breweries ($2.6 billion), and wineries and distilleries ($975 million). The report also found that Canada’s legal cannabis industry supported over 227,000 jobs across the country in 2024.
