Thailand Issues New Cannabis Enforcement Guidelines
One of the most closely watched cannabis markets on the planet in recent years is Thailand. The Southeast Asian country’s emerging cannabis industry has undergone multiple policy and regulatory changes since 2022. That process continued this week, with Thailand’s government announcing new enforcement guidelines for the cannabis industry.
“Thailand’s Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine (DTAM) said on June 22, 2026, it had issued tougher enforcement guidelines for cannabis businesses that breach the Public Health Ministry’s 2025 rules on cannabis as a controlled herb, with licence suspensions of 30 to 90 days and possible revocation for repeat offences.” reported The Nation.
“Under the guidelines, a 30-day suspension can be imposed if an operator fails to keep required business reports at the premises, keeps incomplete reports or fails to submit them to the registrar.” the outlet also reported. “The same penalty also applies to sales or exports of controlled herbs that do not meet good cultivation and harvesting standards, known as GACP, or an equivalent or higher standard.”
Suspensions will also be applied for the following violations:
- Failure to clearly display a license
- Failure to provide an electronic license to inspectors
- Advertising cannabis for ‘commercial purposes’
- Failure to report exports
- Selling cannabis without a prescription from a qualified practitioner
Revocations of licenses will occur for the following violations:
- Filing false reports
- Selling cannabis to people under 20, pregnant or breastfeeding women, without a prescription
- Allowing on-site consumption
- Selling products in vending machines
- Selling cannabis online
- Selling cannabis in prohibited places (such as temples, dormitories, and public parks)
Thailand’s climate is ideal for large-scale cannabis cultivation, and the country has the potential to become one of the top international sources for cannabis exports to other legal markets.
