Medical Cannabis Imports Increase In Spain
Spain is a unique market for cannabis. Legal medical cannabis production is not new, but it is largely focused on the export market. The Spanish Government approved a Royal Decree last year, providing for the use of cannabis preparations in hospital care and under specialist prescription. All the while, the nation is home to countless cannabis clubs that are frequented by cannabis patients and recreational consumers alike.
According to a recent newsletter from cannabis data company Cannamonitor, medical cannabis imports are increasing in Spain. In 2024, a total of 45,099 kg of medical cannabis products were imported. The total decreased to 26,883 kg in 2025. In the first half of 2026, roughly 25,730 kg were imported, putting the country on pace to surpass the 2024 total and nearly double the 2025 total if current trends persist.
On the export side of the equation, which includes flower, Spain exported 46,141 kg of medical cannabis products in 2024. The total decreased to 30,589 kg in 2025. In the first half of 2026, Spain exported 18,305 kg of legal medical cannabis products.

“According to INFARMED, Portugal alone sent 11,386 kg to Spain in H1 — about 44% of all Spanish imports, primarily for processing and sterilisation.” Cannamonitor wrote in its recent newsletter. “AEMPS lists twenty countries of origin and destination: apart from Portugal, the main trading partners remain Germany, the UK and Poland.”
“Spain authorised 19.6 t of medical production in 2025 — with 4 commercial growers, 4 geneticists, and 9 EU-GMP certified operators active in the field.” Cannamonitor added.

For context, Germany, which is the world’s top destination for medical cannabis exports from other countries, imported 67.569 tonnes of medical cannabis products in just the first 3 months of 2026 alone. Australia, which imports the second-most legal medical cannabis products, imported roughly 81.1 tonnes of medical cannabis products in 2025.
